Now 163 pounds heavy and 38.5 inches around

Now being almost 23 weeks along and more than halfway to the end, I thought I’d post a brief update on the progress of the increase in my weight and girth. For the most part increases have continued as predicted. My average rate of weight increase has gone up ever so slightly to 0.196 pounds/day (compared to 0.190 pounds/day previously). Rate of girth increase has slowed a little to 0.053 inches/day (or 1.35 mm/day) compared to 0.067 inches/day or 1.7mm/day previously. The result of this is that my girth to weight ratio has dropped slightly to 0.270 from 0.344 inches/pound. Extrapolation of these values to January 6th indicates a maximum weight to 184 pounds (up from 183), with no significant change in maximum girth (steady at 47 inches max). For those who were wondering, these plots also show that my starting girth (at 4 weeks pregnant) was 31.5 inches and my weight was 137 pounds. Stay Tuned for more updates!

Turning Leaves in August?

Posted in Uncategorized on August 25th, 2008 by mish

Well the tulips didn’t bloom until June, but this hasn’t delayed the start of the end.  I’ve spotted more than a few leaves that have already turned yellow.  This brings me to the midpoint of being pregnant, just under 20 weeks to go.  I’m up to 160 pounds and am 38 inches around.  Latest pics indicate it’s a boy and that all is well with him.  He started kicking the heck out of my lower organs a few weeks ago, already indicating that he shares his brothers active disposition.  Otherwise the summer has been BUSY!  We’ve seen lot’s of Matt coming and going as he commutes between Saskatoon and Vancouver, finishing up there and starting up here.  Island life mom came for an extended 10 day visit in late July which included a roadtrip/camping expedition into the rural past of south eastern Saskatchewan, searching for old homesteads and burial plots.  Thomas loved the part where he and I and mom all slept together in the tent!  Following a few days at the lake sailing tumbleweeds we then headed east to New England. Went paddling on the New Meadows inlet in Maine with Alyson, hit the Lake Sunapee beaches in New Hampshire with Thomas’ cousins Bou and Nysaa, as well as Aunt Alli and Uncle Aidan and relaxed over tasty meals at Lola’s in Newton.

Otherwise we finally got some pics of our Spring trip to Ireland up – follow the ‘albums’ link on the right and enter the same old password.

37 degrees and still simmering…

Posted in General on July 7th, 2008 by mish

July has arrived and with it hot temperatures (37 degrees Celsius last Monday!!) and a slowing of the general pace of everything.  Despite being up 15 pounds and pregnant I managed to get out windsurfing 3 times last week (moved into the 2nd trimester – so nausea and headaches are gone thank goodness!).  Twice at Blackstrap and once at Redberry. I can’t say that ‘I’ve still go it’ but it was a lot of fun.  Raced a total of 5 races – discovered that I need about 8 knots of wind on the old MSA cobra to stay ahead of the lasers and 29ers.  Any less than this and I shoot out the back of the pack.

While I was busy windsurfing, Thomas and Imbaw flew to Boston for a family visit.  Good parties were had and a trip to the Boston Aquarium was a highlight.  If you would like to see some video footage of ‘Thomas and the fish’ drop us an email and well send you the link. Everyone is now back home and the BBQ is just heating up for the season!

By way of a news flash – Matt is moving back to Saskatoon!  He officially started his new position as an assistant professor at the Veterinary College last week.  Not that he has moved yet.  He will commute between Saskatoon and Vancouver until September 1st, finishing up experiments at UBC while starting to write grants to fund his own research in the mean time.  The vet college is right across the street from PBI, so I look forward to working and playing with Matt in the future!

183 pounds?

As an addendum to my last posting, when my father saw my quantitative pregnancy plots he immediately noted that the relationships were linear and thus wanted to know ‘how big will you be after 9 months?’.   Well extrapolation of the plots to 9 months suggest I will be 183 pounds heavy and 47 inches around, by January 7th 2009.  This may not be too far off the mark as I hit 179 pounds the day Thomas was born.  And for the record, I lost all but 3 of the pounds I gained last time…

…Bring June Flowers!

Posted in General on June 19th, 2008 by mish

OK it’s June 17th. I missed posting my thoughts back in May. But this was for good reason(s). First of all there were no flowers blooming in May. The weather was cold and dry for most of the month, and if I couldn’t report on the flowers blooming I just didn’t see any reason to post anything. The lilac tree finally bloomed around June 1st, about 3 weeks late, along with the tulips, which are still blooming in the front yard. Tulips in June? Ridiculous!

Another reason not to post in May – Too much traveling. We were away from Saskatoon from May 15th until June 1st. First a work/holiday trip to Ireland with the 3 of us and Imbaw’s mom, followed by attendance at a Alyson M’s wedding. Both were lovely times, but the exhaustion was compounded by the additional fact that I am once again pregnant. The nausea and fatigue factors of the first trimester have been pretty high and pretty much led to my exclusion from involvement in any extracurricular activities (aside from all the travel!).

Monitoring the Pregnancy. So when I was pregnant with Thomas 2 years ago my dearest brother couldn’t understand why I hadn’t been plotting my weight and girth increases regularly. So for his benefit and my own humor, I am plotting these values this time round. I haven’t figured out how to post the actual plots yet, but will keep working on this. What you do need to know for now is that my rate of weight gain so far (since April 28, 2008) has been 0.190 pounds/day. My rate of girth increase has been 0.067 inches/day (this is about 1.7mm/day for those who prefer metric). Plotted as a function of each other, this comes to 0.344inches/pound (8.7mm/pound). What  fun! You can see the plots by clicking HERE to open a PDF image of them, but again hopefully I’ll figure out a better way to post them live.

OK that’s it for now. Everyone is doing well, even the cats and dog. Mish 🙂
